Breakfast at Kopitan Restaurant

It took me a while to figure out why would this place be named Kopitan, which I think is due to the fact that the name itself is catchy and the name Kapitan has already been used for a nearby indian restaurant. It was on a Sunday morning,

Banana Leaf Rice and Tandoori Naan at Sri Ananda

From Little India, many of you might be wondering, why come up with such a name? To be honest, I think indian food has an authenticity that is truly unique. I believe not many of us penangites actually know more than a handful of indian food, wait, you're thinking about - roti canai aren't you?

Hokkien Mee at Green House Kopitiam

The time was ticking fast. It was getting late. At any moment from now, starvation would be killing us. Needless to mention that we were afraid that at this time, precisely at 11.25 pm, it'll be very hard to find a place to drug ourselves with food.

The following is a review by Master Leung Ka-Dong who has worked in a tea house in Hong Kong since the early 1970s. Here are 12 things about tea that no restaurateur (referring to dim sum restaurant owners) would have told you :

Nando's at Gurney Plaza

The first Nando's Restaurant was founded in 1987 in Johannesburg, South Africa. And today, Nando's has already been a worldwide franchise restaurant reaching out to places we have never even heard of - Austalia, Mauritius, Zimbabwe and etc. Reputedly famous for its spices and chicken or more specifically peri-peri chicken, and specializes in flame-grilled peri-peri chicken,

Jawa Mee at Seasons (Vegetarian)

The 1st and 15th day during each month of the Lunar calendar is celebrated by the Chinese simply by visiting temples, praying or practicing vegetarianism. The enigma in many people is that vegetarian food does not taste good or at least not as good as non-vegetarian food, and therefore people only eat vegetarian food when they need, especially during auspicious occasions.

Spaghetti Carbonara at Manila Place

We were lingering around in Gurney Plaza, wanting to celebrate our dear friend's birthday. We couldn't decide which restaurant to go on a Saturday night, and after some indecisive moments, we finally decided to go to Manila Place for dinner.

Laksa and Yam Rice at Seang Tek Road

People often think that in order to promote their food business well, one of the criteria is to have a good location, a hot spot, or a slot where all the commotion is in town. But in Penang, that's not always the case. Good location does not make a food good, but it is good food that makes a location good.

Durian Trip to the Hills of Sungai Ara

At this time of the year, most of us if not all Penangites have one food to hunt in common. Can you guess what is that ? Yes, it's durian and no doubt You Are Smarter Than A Fifth Grader :)

Seafood Popiah at Padang Brown

The wonder in Penang is the people here are very innovative, food wise that is. It's not about giving funny names like Khor Tsu Koon to the the durians, but innovating a local delicacy into it's own signature. And today, we're food hunting for popiah (fresh spring rolls), or more specifically Seafood Popiah.

Curry Mee at Air Itam Market

It was a beautiful Saturday morning, and we woke up early at 7am for something different, something we don't do so often - marketing. It's not business marketing, but grocery marketing to prepare a lot of stuffs for tonight's invited barbeque dinner by the beach. So we decided to go to Air Itam Market,

Banana Leaf Rice and Tandoori Naan at Sri Ananda Bahwan

From Little India, many of you might be wondering, why come up with such a name? To be honest, I think indian food has an authenticity that is truly unique. I believe not many of us penangites actually know more than a handful of indian food, wait, you're thinking about - roti canai aren't you? No, roti canai is not an authentic indian food. Most of the spices we have in the world today actually originates from India, and not to mention the unexplored world of diversities of indian cuisine just makes indian food more mysterious than it seems.

And so, I was back to this place for the second time to have a revenge on something I didn't get my hands on during my last trip, which is the Banana Leaf Rice. This may be one of the food that started inspiring me for this blog's name, reminiscing to the time when I was just a little kid, being introduced to a spectacular experience with banana leaf rice in my life for the very first time. Ever since then, I was diagnosed with a nostalgia in search of the best authentic indian cuisine.

Lassi is a traditional Punjabi yogurt-based drink which originates from the Subcontinent of India. Having assortments of fruit lassi before, this was still my first experience with Banana Lassi. This drink was probably top of the league, and every sip just seemed so impeccable with the blend of sweetness and aroma from the banana yogurt. The yogurt drink had a smooth and thick texture, wasn't really good in thirst-quenching but still very much remarkable.  -  9.0

Tandoori Naan, another popular indian cuisine among penangites. As the name suggests, Naan is actually a flat-bread cooked in tandoor (clay oven). Tandoori Chicken on the other hand, is an intensively reddish-hot roasted chicken seasoned with tandoori masala and sprinkled with fresh slices of onions and green peppers. The chicken meat wasn't only tender with minimal spiciness, but also aromatic at the same time with the fresh-from-the-clay-oven flavour (something I simply couldn't describe).   - 7.5

This is the Banana Leaf Rice with Briyani Rice. Now, if this is your first time going through this dish, let me share something new with you. After placing your order of banana leaf rice, you'll be served a piece of big banana leaf, followed by three different traditional indian vegetables (comprising potatoes, salad and pumpkin) which varies from place to place. Lastly the rice would be placed in the middle of the leaf, with pappadam (or papadum) which is a crispy indian cracker as a sideline. One thing you ought to know is that ordering banana leaf rice at any indian restaurants is a known privilege for people with big tummy and appetite, and why? Simply because you're given unlimited refills of the rice (white rice), vegetables with curry, and best of all, the pappadam. Nevertheless, you can order a plate of add-ons, well for me, the tandoori chicken to stir the whole banana leaf rice even better.   - 7.0

As a last useful tip, the indians practise a tradition whereby after finishing their banana leaf rice (meal), a proper manners would be to fold the banana leaf towards you (inwards) indicating satisfaction of the meal while folding it outwards indicating that the meal isn't satisfying.

As usual, the service was bad as most of the staffs could not communicate well in English and a host of other reasons. But food wise, it's still a good place to chill and dine.

But soon enough, my worries seemed so insignificant as we were still in Penang, a place where good food is available all the time, no matter if you're wearing a hygienic yellow t-shirt that says "CLEAN 2.0" .

Traveling on the rather still busy roads, fast enough we found ourselves seated in Green House kopitiam, which is situated alongside of Burma Road. Purportedly famous for its Hokkien Mee or also known as Prawn Mee, even at this hour of the day, there was still a multitude of people at this place.

It seemed like we were at the right place at the right time, seeing so many people around us, it just stands to show that how Penangites truly love to eat. It was a mere 15 minutes wait before our orders were served.

What made this stall of Hokkien Mee special was probably the plentiful choices of add-ons to choose from, like fish balls, herbal eggs, or even sio bak (roasted pork meat). As for a change, we ordered maggi noodles instead of the usual yellow noodles. I think the key player in this bowl of noodles is none other than the soup. The soup was richly flavoured with a mixture of spiciness and slight sweetness, but to be honest, it wasn't to the extent of amazingly good. Although I was restlessly sweating, I wished that I could enjoy more of the spiciness of the soup with the sambal (chili paste), which wasn't spicy enough. Everything else was just in place, but still this bowl of Hokkien Mee was nothing to shout of.

We ordered a bowl of Bak Kut Teh with yam rice, and after seeing many of these similar orders on a few other tables, no doubt we felt more relieved. It was better than what I expected, with adequate amount of ingredients inside the aromatic broth (soup) such as pork meat, pork organs, mushrooms and tofu puffs. How do I actually describe this soup, let's see. It started of with a fraction of bitterness but quickly followed by light waves of sweetness and herbal fragrance.

We finished our conquest for good food with this Fried Ice Cream, filled with different flavours from vanilla to yam and also mint.
Nonetheless, I think most penangnites like myself tend to develop nocturnal habits because of the good food you can find at night, or in this case at midnight.

Prices .
Hokkien Mee (normal) - RM 3.50
Bak Kut Teh - RM 8+
Fried Ice Cream - RM 2.50 per piece

Opens daily from 8pm to 2am .

1
Miracle Fruit
Synsepalum dulcificum

2674

The miracle fruit, or sweet berries, is a very strange berry native to West Africa. What makes the fruit strange and miraculous, is miraculin (a sugar substitute), which is found in large quantities in the fruit, combined with a glycoprotein. The fruit itself does not contain a lot of sugar, and tastes only mildly sweet but when eaten, the glycoprotein binds to the tongues taste buds, which, for about an hour after eating the fruit, distorts any other taste into sweetness. With that effect you could technically eat a lemon, and it would taste like a ball of syrup. Although the definite reason for this occurrence is not fully understood, it would seem as if the miraculin distorts the shape of the sweetness receptors in the tongue so that they pick up on acid instead of sweetness. The sweetness receptors on your tongue then transmit to the brain to taste sweetness when they come in contact with any acidity. In the 70s attempts were made to commercialize and sell the fruit as a diet aid, as it has the potential to turn any meal sweet, without affecting your calorie intake. These attempts were shattered when the FDA declared it a food additive, due to pressure from sugar companies who could foresee big losses in profits. In the last two years the berries have been making a comeback, by being the guest star of many tasting parties in the states. The berries are dried and exported, and the party guests each have one and then taste all kinds of common foods to experience a new taste sensation with every bite.

5 Foods that Make You Slim

Take a look around any book store, and you'll find dozens of diet books lining the shelves. Despite their bright and cheerful covers, with their positive, upbeat claims, many of them are filled with information that promotes all the wrong messages.

"The word 'diet' is negative and implies people can go on and off them," said Jane Korsberg, a senior instructor in the department of nutrition at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland.

Korsberg is one nutritionist who thinks it would be better to re-think the whole concept of dieting.

"'Diet foods' are confusing to many people," she explained. "What diet is the 'diet food' geared for? Is it low-calorie, low-fat, low-sodium, low-sugar, gluten-free, et cetera?"

Besides, many of the foods that specifically target dieters seem to rarely satisfy. Take those 100-calorie snack packs, for example, made to help people control calories. Those often don't even work, Korsberg says. After all, few people actually stop at only one pack.

You don't need fancy plans or complicated point systems to be thin. All you need to do is make smart food choices, watch your portion sizes and stay active.

"Learning to eat properly for a lifetime is more beneficial," Korsberg said. "The emphasis should be on choosing healthful foods every day and changing lifestyles for the better."

So instead of sticking to diet fare, fill up on nutritious, wholesome foods. And if you need some recommendations, you can start with these five options, which are among the many delicious foods that make a good addition to healthy eating while keeping you slender.

Apples
Apples are a good source of dietary fiber. Dietary fiber not only contributes to a healthy digestive system and reduced cholesterol, but it also benefits smart eaters by yielding no calories while keeping them satisfied.

And there's something else about the fruit that might help you feel full. A study in the journal "Appetite" found that when women added either three apples or three pears to their daily meals, they lost more weight than people who added three oat cookies to their diets -- even though the fruit and the cookies contained the exact same amount of dietary fiber.

Although the reason behind this finding may be a mystery, there is something to be said for the findings. According to Alan Aragon, a nutritionist and author of "Girth Control: The Science of Fat Loss & Muscle Gain," crunchy foods in particular can trick a person into feeling fuller. The act of chewing may send satiety signals to your body, he says, making you think you've eaten more than you really have and keeping hunger at bay.

Almonds
If you're looking for a tasty midday snack, a handful of almonds are a well-regarded option. A study in 2009 in "The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition" found that women who ate nuts at least two times a week were more successful at keeping weight off than those who didn't eat this food.

One particular favorite among some nutritionists is almonds, says Aragon. One ounce of this food contains only 167 calories, plus it packs roughly 6 g of protein and 3 g of fiber, both nutrients that can make you feel full. Furthermore, like apples, almonds are crunchy and require a lot of chewing, so they, too, can make you feel like you've eaten more than you actually did and keep you fuller longer.

Salmon
If you're uncertain about fish, there's no need to fear. Seafood can be part of a healthy diet. And there's some evidence that the fat in foods such as salmon can boost satiety levels, says Aragon. For example, a study published in the "International Journal of Obesity" found that when dieters ate salmon a few times a week, they lost about two more pounds than those who didn't include seafood in their meals.

And in spite of the mention of salmon's fat content, the food is relatively low in calories. One 3-oz. serving has just 175 calories. Salmon is a good source of protein as well.

Eggs
There's no doubt that protein, like fiber, has impressive satiating powers. And while eggs seem to have a bad reputation in some circles, there can be no contesting their ability to help keep your weight in check.

Research has shown that eating eggs at breakfast can help you fight weight gain all day long. A study reported in 2008 in the "International Journal of Obesity" found that when dieters ate two eggs for breakfast for five days out of the week, they lost 65 percent more weight than dieters who consumed a bagel in the morning. Although protein is likely to fill you up whenever you eat it, some scientists suspect that having more in the morning can keep you feeling fuller all day long.

Tomatoes
It's true that most veggies make for great diet fare. Non-starchy vegetables in particular, such as carrots, celery and spinach, are filled with fiber. Like other foods high in fiber, they can help keep you feeling satiated.

Plus, they're pretty self-regulating, says Aragon. You can't really overeat with non-starchy vegetables. After all, how many baby carrots can a person eat without needing to dunk them in some ranch dressing?

So while there are many veggies that can help you stay slim, tomatoes might be a particularly good option because they're so tasty. And, besides, with that whole a-tomato-is-a-vegetable-no-it's-a-fruit argument, you might have forgotten all about eating them. One cup of cooked, red tomatoes contains just 43 calories, but tastes just as delicious as any number of high-calorie foods.

And that's at least half the secret, finding foods that are both healthy and tasty. The good thing is, they do exist. Over time, you'll discover what wholesome, filling foods you prefer, expanding your choices while shrinking your waistline.

Tang Yuan at Sugar Dynasty

Do you know why desserts are so unique ? Because spelled backwards, it is actually stressed and this is when you need desserts to do just the trick. It's not like I'm having stress now, but I've always known for having a sweet tooth, which makes me work harder on brushing my teeth.
It was 9.30 pm and we were greedily hunting for desserts after finishing our dinner. As we were just in the town area, we decided to travel back in time to a dynasty where it is called - Sugar Dynasty (Tang Chao).

The interior featured a really simple and welcoming look. Installed with wifi and being able to accommodate only a few tables, this place seemed ideal to spend an idle hour over for leisure and relaxation.

As the name Sugar Dynasty suggests, this is a place that offers extensive types of desserts ranging from warm to chilled or even herbal. While waiting for our orders, I was given the opportunity to snap a few shots from behind the scenes - the kitchen. The staffs and the owner were very friendly as they informed me that their kitchen was a little messy and jokingly asked me to edit the photos before uploading them.

Tang Yuan is traditional food symbolic to the Chinese. It is made of glutinous rice flour and to be made into shapes of balls with or without fillings inside.

This is the Almond Paste Snow Fungus. To be honest, it was hard to tell the exact taste of it. A little almond flavour was detected followed by hints of milky kind of sweetness. My friend tried it and she didn't like it, probably because the strong fragrance of the almond mixing up with something else. In case like this, I find it  hard to tell whether I like it or not, so I'll give it a yellow light which is between the green and red light.   - 6.0

Now this dessert is a common delicacy, we all know too well. Si Ke Ting (name as in the menu) or also known as White Fungus Dessert on the other hand had a distinctive taste. It was sweet and delectable, with dozens of white fungus and jellies swimming inside.  - 7.5

After having appetizing warm desserts, we decided to turn the table around by having something cold and icy. It was this -  Mango Sago which relished our confidence about this place. It was really mouthwatering and each bite is filled with remarkable sweetness and satisfaction. And we were like thinking, the four of us should have ordered this, though we ended up sharing it, it was still a joyful ride.   - 8.5

If you're wondering why there isn't any tang yuan, I must apologize. In fact, we did order a bowl of Peanut Crunch Tang Yuan which tasted slightly above average but somehow the photos got corrupted.

Nevertheless, if you're not into ordering Ginseng or Bird Nest over here, everything else seemed so affordable and good. They do also offer meals like fried rice and fried noodles to be savored as your dinner.

10 Benefits of Eggs

1. Eggs are great for the eyes. According to one study, an egg a day may prevent macular degeneraton due to the carotenoid content, specifically lutein and zeaxanthin. Both nutrients are more readily available to our bodies from eggs than from other sources.

2. In another study, researchers found that people who eat eggs every day lower their risk of developing cataracts, also because of the lutein and zeaxanthin in eggs.

3. One egg contains 6 grams of high-quality protein and all 9 essential amino acids.

4. According to a study by the Harvard School of Public Health, there is no significant link between egg consumption and
heart disease. In fact, according to one study, regular consumption of eggs may help prevent blood clots, stroke, and heart attacks..

5. They are a good source of choline. One egg yolk has about 300 micrograms of choline. Choline is an important nutrient that helps regulate the brain, nervous system, and cardiovascular system.

6. They contain the right kind of fat. One egg contains just 5 grams of fat and only 1.5 grams of that is saturated fat.

7. New research shows that, contrary to previous belief, moderate consumption of eggs does not have a negative impact on cholesterol. In fact, recent studies have shown that regular consumption of two eggs per day does not affect a person's lipid profile and may, in fact, improve it. Research suggests that it is saturated fat that raises cholesterol rather than dietary cholesterol.

8. Eggs are one of the only foods that contain naturally occurring vitamin D.

9. Eggs may prevent
breast cancer. In one study, women who consumed at least 6 eggs per week lowered their risk of breast cancer by 44%.
10. Eggs promote healthy hair and nails because of their high sulphur content and wide array of vitamins and minerals. Many people find their hair growing faster after adding eggs to their diet, especially if they were previously deficient in foods containing sulphur or B12.
